Broadband penetration in the US was at 20% in 2007. 8Mbps is positively luxurious. (When I lived in Ohio I was at 3Mbps advertised, which of course translates to significantly less.)

Now I'm on a shared satellite link which is something like 8Mbps for 30 users.
