Amazon doesn't (directly) monitor whether their servers are up. They just look at the revenue graph in real-time, and if there's a noticeable dip, something's wrong.
Right, although they don't have to manually look at this -- they have many sophisticated monitors in place that immediately notify engineers if things are not in normal ranges.
